Frances and Mary Allen were artistic photographers who used their camera to create pictures they felt were typical of traditional, country New England life. Early settlers had long before learned from Native Americans how to collect maple tree sap and boil it down into sugar or syrup in early spring, when cold nights and warm days make the sap run. The Allen sisters thus captured a typical New England activity when they posed these children busily gathering sap.
