This picture shows 3 plummets connected to a modern net. Plummets, or weights, were used to force fishing nets to sink in the water to catch fish. Native American men from southern New England often made their own tools, including hemp nets. For Native American groups living along river valleys and coastal areas, fish were an important part of their diet.
