An American potter made and decorated this "redware" platter in the 2nd quarter of the 19th century. A platter like this might have been used to hold the meat that was such a large part of the American diet in this period. Redware was usually used in the kitchen and for other purposes; by this time it was not as popular as transfer-printed pottery from England. None of these things was so expensive or popular as porcelain, which was made in China.
