Tumblers, basically tube-shaped with flat bottoms, were the most common glass cup in early America. They were used for a wide range of drinks, especially the beer, cider, and ale that were drunk by most Americans. Taverns used tumblers to serve liquors such as rum, gin, and whiskey as well as to hold the mixed drinks of the 1830s and 1840s with names like mint-sling, hailstone, snowstorm, and timber-doodle.
