The unveiling of the soldiers' statue on the Deerfield, Massachusetts, Common took place on Wednesday, September 4, 1867. J. C. Batterson of Hartford, Connecticut, made the stone monument topped with a Civil War soldier. The Committee of Arrangements was composed of Josiah Fogg, Charles Arms, George Sheldon, and Nathaniel Hitchcock and the program was printed in nearby Greenfield. The band played, the minister offered a prayer, the audience sang, and people from Deerfield gave speeches and poems.
