Stephen West Williams (1790-1855) was a member of the sixth generation of the family when he wrote this History of Deerfield in 1836. He trained as a medical doctor, but had a strong interest in history and, in addition to publishing several medical texts he assembled an herbarium (a collection of native plant specimens) and wrote a study of the Williams family in Massachusetts. This handwritten "Ancient History of Pocomptuck or Deerfield" was never published and came down in the possession of the family until it was given to the museum.
