Relations between the British government and the American colonies failed rapidly in the ten years following the end of the French and Indian War in 1763. One such argument was over whether the colonies should be taxed for tea. News of Boston's "tea party" electrified the western Massachusetts town of Deerfield, where the local Whig party supported the dumping of the tea and the local Tory party did not.
