In 1781 Massachusetts created two kinds of militia: the "training band," referred to in this paper that met and drilled regularly; and the "alarm list" to appear, with weapons, once a year. This notice of 1792 alerts Elihu
Hoyt of Deerfield that he is to appear, armed, "as the law directs," at the parade ground near the meetinghouse on September 3, September 12, and September 13. The men had to come with their own equipment.
