Forty-nine scholars enrolled at the Academy for its first quarter term in the winter of 1799. Although the practice of admitting female students was not standard among the already existing academies in 1799- females were not accepted at either of the Phillips academies- eight young ladies were among the forty-nine. Fifteen of the first students came from Deerfield families. They all studied reading, writing, and English grammar. When in 1810 the Academy was closed temporarily while construction was underway, enrollment lists ceased to be kept and the practice was not resumed when the Academy reopened.
