City directories provided important information for the original users and they remain an excellent resource for people studying city life. Because they were published each year, directories serve as windows into city life at particular moments. For example, this Directory for Greenfield, Montague and Deerfield in 1906 shows how the population was changing as more Eastern Europeans moved into the area, it provides information about what people were buying through the advertisements that fill its pages, and, it points out the growing use of a revolutionary form of communication: the telephone.
