By the early 19th century, people who watched local militias at practice often complained that these volunteer soldiers were unfit and poorly trained. The Franklin Cadets of Deerfield, Massachusetts, were not, however. Organized in 1823, their fine uniforms, fancy marching and smooth musket firing impressed those who were watching. The unit played an important role on fall militia training days, and added excitement to many public celebrations. The sound of fifes and drums could be heard whenever the Cadets appeared. This dress sword belonged to Lieutenant Henry Smith, an officer in the Cadets. The Franklin Cadets paraded for the last time in 1854.
