This sword belonged to Captain Joseph Stebbins (1749-1816) of Deerfield, Massachusetts. Stebbins served in the Revolution and later relatives claimed that he carried this sword at Bunker Hill. However, it appears to be a cavalry saber made around 1798 by Connecticut sword maker Nathan Starr. Things connected to the American Revolution (1775-1783) became treasures in the years following the war. Americans were very eager to save these things and this eagerness led some collectors to include keepsakes that were actually made after the Revolution.
