When traveling, men used leather pocketbooks like this one owned by John Burke (1717-1784) to hold money or small personal things. Like many Americans of his time, Major John Burke fought with the English in the French and Indian War (1757-1763), also known as the Seven Years War. This war was the final act in the ongoing struggle between England and France over the ownership of the North American continent.
