Silk sewing thread, twisted, was good for finishing buttonholes and doing embroidery on clothing. It was used only for fancy embroideries. Many women were taught fine or fancy sewing in addition to making clothes and doing mending. Silk thread for embroidery was sold in small skeins. In 1803, Ebenezer H. Williams (1761-1838) bought 2 skeins of black silk at Orlando Ware's store in Deerfield, Massachusetts. He probably bought them for his wife, Joanna Smith Williams.
