This picture of Polly Stebbins (1792-1868), painted by an unknown artist, shows a woman in a black dress. She is wearing earrings and a pin and a red comb can be seen in her hair. Polly, along with her younger brother Rowland, was born deaf. Her father sent the 2 of them to school in Hartford, Connecticut, when The Asylum for the Deaf and Dumb opened in 1817.
