This silhouette of Justin Hitchcock (1752-1822), was done by his son, Dr. Edward Hitchcock (1793-1864). It was made in February of 1822, when Justin was 70 years old. A cheap way to have a picture of a person, the silhouette was usually cut from black paper and put on a sheet of white paper before framing. Justin Hitchcock learned the trade of hatter in Springfield, Massachusetts, and came to Deerfield in 1774. He was a hatter, Revolutionary soldier, and later, music director at the meetinghouse.
