Whereas Thos Wells Timothy Childs Ebenezer Shelden Joseph
Severance Jonathan Hoit John Catlin ye sd Samll Fild
Thos Wells 2d and you the said Thomas French proprietors
of the said Comon Field have represented to me Timothy
Dwight Esqr one of his Majesties Justices of the peace
for said County that a meeting of the Proprietors
of said Comon Field is necessary, first to make choise
of some meet person for a proprietors Clerk, Secondly
for the regulating ye fence Encloseing said Field &
the finding out Each proprietors proportion thereof, &
third by to conclude on some propper method for ye
Calling a Meeting of Said proprietors for ye future
Therefore In His Majestys Name you are hereby authorized
and required to Give notice to the proprietors of Said Comon
Field that they assemble themselves at ye Meeting House in
Said Deerfield upon Monday ye first Day of April next at
Eight of ye Clock in ye Morning for ye Ens and purposes above
Mentioned which Notice you are to Give by posting up a
Notification in wrighting in some puclick place in Deerfield
aforesaid fourteen Dayes before the Day aforementioned
Given under my hand this 4th day of March in the
Seventh year of His Majests Reign Annoq Dom 1733/4

Eight proprietors of the Common Field in Deerfield are named in the document. The year is 1733/34. Thomas French (1657-1733) was one of the early permanent settlers of Deerfield and served as town clerk for twelve years. He is summoned by Justice of the Peace, Timothy Dwight, to call a meeting of the proprietors to name a clerk and to set the regulations for the fencing of the common fields.
