Hymn singing was a common part of early 19th century church services. This hymn, "Amsterdam", was popular in Britain and America in the 18th and 19th centuries. The words are a perfect example of the belief that man is born sinful and only God can help raise him to a higher level of being. In the meantime, he should try to lead a godly life despite his naturally sinful nature.
