The William Coleman House, designed by Asher Benjamin in 1797, was first a private home and the finest example in the town of Greenfield, Massachusetts. By 1829 it had become a high school for young ladies. Wings were added to either end of the building for classrooms and dormitories. The school was out of business by 1843, and when this print was made it was the home of the Honorable Almon Brainard, a lawyer and businessman who lived in the house from 1844 to 1864.
