This tall chest is decorated with carved fans on both of the center drawers. Chests of many drawers became popular in the closet-less houses of the 18th century as people became richer and could afford to have more things. Dr. Elihu Ashley (1750-1817), the owner of this chest, was the son of Deerfield's 2nd minister and married in 1775.
