Some bed warmers had long wooden handles attached to copper or brass pans punched with small holes, and were used to "toast" the sheets by sliding the metal pan filled with hot coals over the sheets before getting into bed. After warming the bed, the warmer had to be returned to the fireplace and emptied of the hot coals. This "pig" could remain in the bed all night or until the water-cooled. Before bedtime it was filled with hot water and placed between the sheets to warm them. It is made of copper to hold and spread heat. This one was made in Scotland.
