Samuel Danforth (1774-1816) of Hartford, Connecticut, was one of the last makers of lidded tankards. He moved to Hartford about 1795 and was the most clever craftsman of his generation. He also made the most pewter items of his family. Nineteen members of his family over 5 generations made pewter things. Tankards were used for alcoholic drink at home and sometimes, in church, for communion.
