This posed photograph of two women at the tea table shows how "taking tea" in the nineteenth century was a custom that showed off elegant living and good manners. Taking tea usually took place in a parlor or sitting room and included polite conversation. The well-equipped tea table included a white tablecloth, china or less-expensive ceramic cups, saucers, sugar and cream pitchers, and, of course, a teapot.
