Commentaries on women, men and marriage were popular themes for nineteenth -century pictures, which often decorated parlor or sitting room walls. Artemas Alden of Barre, Massachusetts, chose to illustrate "Stages of Woman's Life from infancy to the brink of grave." The title, "The virtuous woman is a crown to her husband" is a good example of the period's image of women as teachers and preservers of home life values. The hourglasses, clock, and deer remind viewers of how quickly life passes.
