Justin Hitchcock (1752-1822) of Deerfield, Massachusetts, made this bass viol in 1770. A traveling singing master told him to give up trying to learn to sing, but he did not listen to this advice. He became a good musician anyway, leading the church choir and playing this bass viol of his own making. Instruments like this were used at a time when most New England meetinghouses did not have organs.
